Zoo Artis, Aquarium – Amsterdam (NL) Artis Aquarium
RTIS is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. The ARTIS Aquarium, a unique national monument built in the Neoclassical style, first opened its doors in 1881 and is now in urgent need of restoration. Years of exposure to saltwater corrosion have taken their toll on the building. During the restoration, the structure is being made future-proof and sustainable. The roof and façades are being fully insulated, and solar panels are being installed. In addition, the mechanical and electrical systems are being modernised, with SDR responsible for the electrical installations.
Sustainable lighting for an iconic national monument
Since 2021, the iconic ARTIS Aquarium in Amsterdam has been undergoing a major restoration and sustainability upgrade. The building is being carefully renovated to ensure it can serve future generations, without compromising its historical value.
As part of this modernization, EVA LED supplied sustainable linear lighting for the animal enclosures within the Aquarium. The EVAline fixtures have been seamlessly integrated into the upgraded installations, contributing to both animal welfare and the building’s energy efficiency. With their robust design, high light quality, and long lifespan, the EVAline fixtures are perfectly suited for this unique and demanding environment.
Technology in service of nature and heritage
EVA’s lighting solutions are part of a broader technical modernization, including a complete renewal of the electrical systems by SDR Elektrotechniek. With the integration of technologies such as thermal energy storage (WKO), solar panels, and the insulation of historic elements, ARTIS is transforming the Aquarium into the most sustainable of its kind in the Netherlands.
The renewed Aquarium will reopen in 2026 with a permanent exhibition focused on the importance of clean and healthy water — a theme that perfectly aligns with ARTIS’s mission and EVA’s contribution to a sustainable environment for both people and animals.
